Notifications

The bell in the panel header: what needs you in this account, what happened in it, and its outages and recoveries. Inbox and Archive.

The bell in the panel header. It shows what needs you in the current account, what happened in it, and its monitors' outages and recoveries. The bell is a record in the panel, not an alert: to be told wherever you are, set up alert channels. Nothing in the bell is emailed to you as well.

The count on the bell is red when something needs action or a monitor is down, and blue when there are only unread items. Click it for the newest items, or open Notifications for the full list. Opening an item marks it read and takes you to the page it is about; Mark all read clears the rest.

Needs action

These are worked out from the account's state each time a page loads, so each one disappears on its own when its cause is gone. Owners and members see them, viewers don't. The most urgent ones also show under the page title.

  • Monitoring is paused, the account is out of credits, or credits are running out.
  • The monthly plan's payment failed.
  • No alert channel can reach anyone, or some monitors have none.
  • An alert channel failed 3 times in a row, or alerts to an email address bounce.
  • A verified domain's Cloudflare zone or name servers are gone, with the date its verification ends.
  • An integration's sync is failing.
  • For hosting providers: a customer account reached its monthly cap.

Outages and recoveries

When an outage is confirmed, the bell gets an item for everyone in the account, viewers included:

  • « is down», with the reason and the address. It opens the incident page, and it stays red, with a red bell count, while the incident is open and not on hold.
  • « is partly down», when some regions cannot reach it.
  • « is back up», with how long it was down, when it recovers or is reachable from everywhere again.

Slow responses and firewall (WAF) blocks don't appear here, and neither do monitors in shadow mode. They go to your alert channels only.

Information

These are saved when something happens:

  • Billing: credits or SMS units bought, and the monthly plan renewed (owners).
  • Reports: on the 1st, the previous month's report is ready.
  • Team: a member joined or was removed, and an API key was created (owners).
  • Security: a two-factor method was removed. You see it for your own login, and owners see it for any member.
  • Support: a reply to a ticket you opened.
  • Domains: a verified domain is expiring or has expired.
  • Copies of emails we send you: product news and legal notices. The email stays the official copy.
  • An account set up by a program, once you claim it.

Titles never show a changed value, such as a new address or setting; open the item for the details. Viewers see outages and recoveries, and otherwise only items addressed to them personally.

Inbox and Archive

The bell and the Notifications page have two tabs, Inbox and Archive. Each item has an archive button, and Archive all clears the inbox. Archiving marks an item read and moves it to your Archive only: your teammates still see it in their inbox. Move to inbox brings it back.

Read state and how long items are kept

Read state and the archive are kept per person: what you have read or archived stays unread in your teammates' inbox. Archiving doesn't keep an item longer. Items are deleted 30 days after they were read, or 90 days after they were made if nobody read them, and sooner if the account or the user is deleted. The Privacy Policy covers this in §2.10.
