When does a domain expire?
Every domain is rented for a period, usually a year. If it isn’t renewed by the expiry date, the website and email stop working, and after a grace period anyone can register it. Auto-renew fails more often than people expect: an expired card is enough.
Straight from the registry.
We find the registry for the domain’s ending in IANA’s RDAP list and ask it for the domain: the expiry, registration and last-change dates, the registrar, the status locks and the nameservers. Where a registry has no RDAP but its WHOIS shows the date, we read that instead. These are the same sources our domain expiry alerts use.

Most generic endings, and .uk, .fr, .pl and many more country endings.
.io, .it, .co …
Also .me, .se and .nu: no RDAP, but their WHOIS has the date.
.gr, .de, .eu …
Also .cy, .nl, .es, .at, .be, .ch and .li: the registry doesn’t publish the date.
Where does the date come from?
From RDAP, the registries’ official service that replaced WHOIS. It’s the same data your registrar sees.
What happens when a domain expires?
Most registries give a grace period of around 30 days to renew at the normal price, then a redemption period at a much higher price, and then the domain is released.
Why can’t you find my domain’s date?
Some registries don’t publish it at all, including .gr, .cy, .de, .eu, .nl, .es, .at, .be, .ch and .li. Your registrar’s control panel shows it. In PingWise you can enter the date by hand and get the same reminders. For .io, .it, .co, .me, .se and .nu we read the date from WHOIS, because their registries don’t offer RDAP.
What do statuses like clientTransferProhibited mean?
They’re locks set by the registrar or registry. clientTransferProhibited, for example, stops the domain being moved to another registrar without your approval. That’s good.
Do you store what I check?
We keep your IP address and the time for one hour, only to limit how often you can check. We don’t keep the domain or address you entered.
