Redirect checker
Enter an address. We follow it the way a browser does and show every hop: the status code, where it points next and how long it took.
Monitor the final page, not the redirect
PingWise follows redirects and alerts you when the page at the end stops answering. 650,000 free credits every month.
What is a redirect?
A redirect sends a visitor from one address to another, for example from http:// to https:// or from example.com to www.example.com. Each one costs a round trip before the page even starts loading, and long chains or loops hurt both speed and search rankings.
| Code | Meaning | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| 301 | Moved permanently | A page or domain that moved for good. Search engines move the ranking. |
| 302 | Found (temporary) | A short-term move. Search engines keep the old address. |
| 307 / 308 | Temporary / permanent, method kept | Same as 302 / 301, but a POST stays a POST. |
One hop at a time, timed.
Our server in Germany requests the address with a normal GET, reads the status code and the Location header, and requests the next address, until a page answers without redirecting. Each hop gets its own fresh connection, so its time includes DNS, connecting and TLS, as for a first-time visitor. We follow http and https on ports 80 and 443, stop after 10 hops, and mark a loop as soon as an address comes back.
For how long each hop takes from far away, test the address with the TTFB checker: it times the redirects from 15 locations.
How many redirects are too many?
One is normal (http → https, or adding www). Two is acceptable. More than that slows every first visit; link straight to the final address.
301 or 302?
301 when the move is permanent, 302 when it isn’t. A 302 left in place for months is a common SEO mistake.
What is a redirect loop?
Two addresses that redirect to each other, so the browser never arrives and shows «too many redirects». We stop after 10 hops and mark the loop.
Do you store what I check?
We keep your IP address and the time for one hour, only to limit how often you can check. We don’t keep the domain or address you entered.
