API keys

Where keys are made, what read-only and read-write mean, and the limits per key.

The API reference describes every endpoint. This page is about the keys.

Team → API keys (owners only). A key is pw_ followed by 40 characters, shown once when it is created; the list afterwards shows the prefix and the last use. Pick a scope:

  • Read only: lists and detail of monitors, incidents, groups, status pages, the account's credits. A write with a read-only key answers 403 forbidden.
  • Read and write: also create, change, pause, resume and delete monitors, run check now, and for resellers manage customer accounts.

One key per integration, revoked from the same page when the integration goes. A revoked key answers 401 unauthorized from that moment.

Limits

Per key, per minute: 120 reads, 20 writes and 10 check now calls. Every response carries X-RateLimit-Limit, X-RateLimit-Remaining and X-RateLimit-Reset; over the limit you get 429 with Retry-After. A key can be given higher limits on request: write to hello@pingwise.com with the expected volume.

Reads cost nothing. A monitor created through the API costs the same credits as one created in the panel.

Resellers

A reseller's key can act inside any of its customer accounts by sending X-Account: <customer id or slug>; each change is written to that customer's support log under the key's name. Customers can make their own keys, which see only their own account.
