Best Better Stack alternatives in 2026

Six services compared for people who monitor many sites: what 50, 100, 200 and 500 sites cost a month, how a failure becomes an alert, what the free tier covers, and who pays per seat. Better Stack’s uptime product was called Better Uptime; the pricing below is the same product. Every price and feature below comes from the vendors’ own pages, linked at the end, and a column says where we didn’t find an answer.

Who is writing this: Alex, who runs PingWise, one of the six tools below. That is a bias, so the page is built to be checked: the order is ours, by the criteria in the next section, and the tables let you judge by yours; the numbers are the same ones on our comparison page, each tool has a “where it falls short” section, including ours, and if you work at one of these businesses and something here is wrong, email us and we correct it within one working day.

Key takeaways

  • In our view the reason to leave Better Stack is the price per site, not the monitoring. Its confirmation rule is good (at least 3 of 4 or more locations), and its on-call tooling is better than anything else on this list. But it sells monitors in bundles of 50 at $21 a month, so 500 sites cost $210 a month before a single on-call seat.
  • At 500 sites every 5 minutes the spread is wide among the services whose published plans reach that size: €15.83 at PingWise, €43.20 at updown.io, $210 at Better Stack, and $0 plus a server for Uptime Kuma. StatusCake’s largest published plan covers 300 monitors and HetrixTools’ 200, so 500 is above what they publish.
  • If you need on-call rotations, escalation and a phone that rings, none of the alternatives below replaces that part of Better Stack. Several hand confirmed outages to PagerDuty or to Better Stack itself by webhook, which is how many teams run both.
  • Free tiers: Better Stack gives 10 monitors at 3 minutes. HetrixTools gives 15 every minute, UptimeRobot 50 at 5 minutes, and PingWise’s 650,000 free credits a month cover 75 sites at 5 minutes or 15 every minute.

Why people look for a Better Stack alternative

Better Stack is a good product: an incident-management suite with uptime monitoring inside it. The reasons to look elsewhere are specific, and they are the criteria for this list.

Price grows with every 50 sites

Better Stack’s pricing page lists 10 monitors free and then bundles of 50 monitors at $21 a month billed yearly ($25 monthly). A hosting provider with 240 sites buys five bundles. The price is the same at 30 seconds or 5 minutes, which is fair for fast checks and expensive for slow ones. Two alternatives below charge for use instead, so 500 sites at 5 minutes cost a fraction of 500 at 1 minute.

On-call seats on top

The responders who can be called are listed at $29 per user per month, billed yearly. For a two-person shop that is $58 on top of the monitor bundles. None of the alternatives below charges per on-call responder; how many people can log in differs by plan (see the features table), and PingWise has no seat limit.

Paying for the incident layer you may not use

If what you need is to know that a site is down and why, the on-call rota, escalation policies, incident timelines and the logs product are weight you pay for. If you do need them, stop reading: Better Stack is the right choice, and we say so below.

Fastest interval is 30 seconds

Better Stack documents 30-second checks as its fastest. PingWise goes to 10 seconds on verified domains after a purchase, UptimeRobot and updown.io to 15. For most sites 30 seconds is plenty; for a checkout or an API it may not be.

Price per site: 50 to 500 sites

What a hosting provider or an agency pays a month for HTTP monitors on every site, at 5 minutes and at 1 minute, on PingWise and on Better Stack. The other four services are in the table after this one.

PingWise: one HTTP monitor at 5 minutes is 8,640 checks a month and at 1 minute 43,200, one credit each; the free 650,000 credits a month are subtracted first, and the rest is priced at the rate of the credit pack a year of that usage would use up (packs from €5 for 250,000 credits to €560 for 250 million, valid 24 months). The same arithmetic runs in the cost form on our pricing section. Better Stack: 10 monitors free, then ⌈(sites − 10) ÷ 50⌉ bundles at $21 a month billed yearly, from its pricing page; the same price at any interval; on-call responders at $29 per user are not included. Prices are shown in the currency the vendor shows there, before VAT. Better Stack’s price includes on-call and incident tooling that PingWise does not have.

1. PingWise

Ours. Confirmed alerts from 15 probes on 6 continents, prepaid credits, no seats, built for people who run many sites.

Who it is for

Hosting providers, agencies and anyone who monitors dozens or hundreds of sites and wants the bill to follow the checks, not the site count or the head count. Also small accounts, because the free monthly credits cover more than most of them use.

What stands out

Every scheduled check runs from several cities at once. Nothing pages you until two thirds of 15 probes (10) fail, on at least 3 continents and 3 different providers, two rounds in a row. A Cloudflare challenge or block is reported as “blocked”, not as down. Every alert says what each probe saw. Team members are unlimited. Monitors can be created for every site on a hosting panel at once, and a hosting provider or agency can give each customer its own account under the provider’s brand, paid from one pool of credits with a cap per customer (live since 2 November 2026, see Monitoring for your customers).

Compared with Better Stack

Monitoring for monitoring’s sake: no on-call rota, no escalation, no phone calls, no logs product. The confirmation rule is stricter (10 of 15 probes across continents against 3 of 4 or more locations), the price is per check rather than per bundle of 50, and there are no seats. Where Better Stack is the incident layer, PingWise can feed it: a webhook hands over confirmed outages, so some teams keep Better Stack for on-call and move the checks.

Price

50 sites every 5 minutes: free. 100: €3.21 a month. 500: €15.83. 500 every minute: €46.93. Packs from €5 for 250,000 credits, valid 24 months, no subscription.

Where it falls short

No on-call scheduling, escalation, SMS or phone-call alerts. No browser or transaction checks, no server agent, no log management, 15 probes rather than the hundreds some older vendors list. 10-second intervals, custom ports and POST requests need a domain you have verified with us, and 10 seconds also a credit purchase; an unverified host gets 30 seconds, or 15 after a purchase. It is also the youngest service on this list.

2. UptimeRobot

The best-known monitor, with a large free plan and flat plans by monitor count.

Who it is for

People who want a simple, well-known tool with SMS and phone calls on the paid plans and a free tier that covers a small fleet at 5 minutes.

What stands out

50 monitors at 5 minutes free, 10-second checks on paid plans, SMS and voice alerts, status pages, a long list of integrations, and an API with read-only keys that most other tools can import from.

Compared with Better Stack

Cheaper at every size and simpler, but with a weaker confirmation rule: UptimeRobot documents up to 3 retries in the same region before it alerts, where Better Stack needs 3 of 4 or more locations. Team members are limited on the lower plans (3 on Team), and webhooks and PagerDuty are on Team as well.

Price

10 monitors every minute: €9 a month. 50 every minute: €19. 50 every 5 minutes: free. Prices as the pricing page shows them to a visitor from Greece; UptimeRobot prices differ by country.

Where it falls short

Confirmation from one region, checks run from one place at a time, and seats and integrations behind the higher plans. Plans step up by monitor count, so 200 or 500 sites mean the larger plans, not a quiet-month discount.

3. HetrixTools

The most generous free 1-minute plan in this comparison, with every check run from several locations, and tools a hosting provider needs.

Who it is for

Hosting providers and anyone who runs a mail server: it bundles uptime with blacklist monitoring and a free server agent, and its free plan is enough for a small fleet.

What stands out

15 monitors every minute from 4 locations, free. Every scheduled check runs from several locations at once. Blacklist monitoring of IPs and domains, a server agent for CPU, memory, disks and services at no extra cost, SMS alerts, status pages, heartbeats.

Compared with Better Stack

Monitoring plus hosting tools instead of monitoring plus incident tools. Alerts fire when more than half of the locations you selected fail, a rule in the same family as Better Stack’s. No on-call rota or escalation; the price is a flat plan by monitor count, cheaper than Better Stack at every size we looked at.

Price

10 monitors every minute: free. 50 every minute: $15 a month. 50 every 5 minutes: $15. Cheapest paid plan $8.33 a month, Professional, billed annually.

Where it falls short

A public API for uptime monitors, monitor groups and bulk changes are not found in its documentation, and unlimited team members are listed on the Business plan only. “More than half of the selected locations” is a looser rule than a fixed cross-continent quorum, and 12 cities on 5 continents is less ground than some rivals cover.

4. StatusCake

Flat yearly plans with page-speed, SSL and domain tools; one plan covers up to 100 monitors.

Who it is for

People who want one fixed yearly price and extra tools beyond uptime, and a finance department that prefers the same invoice every year.

What stands out

Page-speed monitors, SSL scoring, domain monitors with blacklist and DNS-record checks, a Linux server agent and SSH tests, about 41 locations, SMS alerts, invoice billing on Business. The Superior plan covers up to 100 monitors at one price.

Compared with Better Stack

Up to 100 monitors for €16.66 a month against $42 for the same count at Better Stack, and more tools around uptime. The trade is the alerting rule: StatusCake documents 0 to 3 confirmation re-checks in the same region, where Better Stack needs several locations. No on-call rota.

Price

Superior, billed annually: €16.66 a month, whether you run 10 or 100 monitors every minute. Free plan: 3 to 10 monitors at 5 to 15 minutes.

Where it falls short

Confirmation is in-region re-checks. Logins are limited to 1 or 2 on the lower plans, 30-second checks are on Business only, the status page is a separate product, and above 100 monitors you are on the Business plan.

5. updown.io

Prepaid credits, no subscription, a small and focused product.

Who it is for

Developers who want a cheap, simple monitor that charges for use, with 15-second checks and an API, and who don’t need an incident-management layer around it.

What stands out

Prepaid credits from a €5 pack, 10 cities on 5 continents, custom HTTP requests with any method, headers and a body on any domain, an Apdex score per check, SMS alerts, status pages and heartbeat monitors.

Compared with Better Stack

The other pay-per-use service on this list, so 500 sites at 5 minutes cost a fraction of 500 at 1 minute, where Better Stack charges the same. Confirmation is three failures with at least one from another location, lighter than Better Stack’s. Its free credits are a one-off 100,000 at sign-up rather than a monthly allowance.

Price

50 monitors every 5 minutes: €4.32 a month. 50 every minute: €21.60. 500 every 5 minutes: €43.20 at the 10-million-credit pack rate. Cheapest pack €5 for 200,000 credits.

Where it falls short

Unlimited team members are not found in its documentation, and neither are PagerDuty alerts, monitor groups, bulk changes or slow-response alerts. The free credits don’t renew. One other location is a lighter confirmation rule than a cross-continent quorum.

6. Uptime Kuma

Free, open source, on your own server. The right answer for some people, and we say so.

Who it is for

Homelabs, side projects, and anyone whose policy forbids sending target lists and results to a third party. Also anyone who needs to check things that are not reachable from the internet: databases, Docker containers, private services.

What stands out

No limits beyond your server, a very long list of check types, every notification channel you can name, status pages, groups, heartbeats, and your data never leaves your machine.

Compared with Better Stack

It replaces the bill with a server to run and patch, and 500 monitors cost the same as 5. It checks from one place, wherever you run it, with retries from the same server, so it cannot tell your site’s outage from its own network’s, and it has none of the incident tooling.

Price

$0 plus a server, for any number of monitors. A documented REST API for managing monitors was not found in its public documentation.

Where it falls short

One location, no confirmation from elsewhere, and somebody has to maintain it. Inside the network it is excellent; for the outside view it needs a hosted service next to it.

If you’re a hosting provider on Enhance

  • Monitors per site, automatically. PingWise connects to an Enhance panel with a read-only key and keeps a monitor for every site, new sites included, so 200 sites don’t mean 200 forms. Details on the Enhance integration page.
  • Blocked, not down. A Cloudflare challenge or block on a customer’s site shows as “blocked”, a warning rather than an outage, so a WAF rule doesn’t page you at night.
  • Firewalls. CPFence has told us it keeps our probe addresses on its global whitelist, refreshed daily from our probe list. For other firewalls and country restrictions, the probe page has paste-ready allow-lists.

Where Better Stack is the better choice

Being honest about this saves everyone time.

On-call scheduling and phone calls

Better Stack has on-call rotations, escalation policies, SMS and phone-call alerts. None of the six above has its own on-call layer; PingWise hands alerts to PagerDuty, which does, and to email, chat tools, push and webhooks. If several people share night duty, that rota and escalation is the product.

Browser checks with Playwright

Better Stack runs Playwright scripts as monitors, billed per minute of browser time. If a login form or checkout flow must be tested end to end, you need a browser, and Better Stack runs one. None of the six above does.

More protocols

Better Stack documents UDP, POP3 and IMAP monitors next to HTTP, TCP, ping, SMTP and DNS. If you run your own mail servers, POP3 and IMAP checks are useful.

One vendor for more of the stack

Better Stack also sells log management and infrastructure monitoring. One bill and one dashboard for logs, metrics and uptime is worth something to a busy team. Many teams use both: Better Stack for on-call and incidents, and a dedicated monitor feeding it confirmed outages by webhook.

Also considered

Four more services, left out of the shortlist for the reasons given, not because they are bad.

Pingdom

About 146 probes in 26 countries, real-browser transaction checks, page speed and real-user monitoring, from SolarWinds. Left out because of price: €14.33 a month for 10 checks and €60.50 for 50, with no free plan, so it does not help anyone leaving Better Stack over cost. Best Pingdom alternatives is the page for it.

Hyperping

18 regions, status pages, SMS and phone calls, browser checks, from $24 a month. Left out because we did not find a published confirmation rule and the entry plan costs more than most of the shortlist for the same monitoring.

Cronitor

Built around cron-job monitoring, with SDKs and per-run metrics, priced per monitor and per user ($2 and $5). Left out because 50 monitors every minute cost $105 there and 500 would cost far more. If scheduled jobs are your main worry, it is the specialist.

Checkmate

An open-source, self-hosted monitor from Bluewave Labs: uptime and Docker monitors, heartbeats, server hardware through its Capture agent, status pages, run with Docker Compose and MongoDB, with worker nodes that share the check load. Left out for the same reason as Uptime Kuma: it checks from wherever you run it and we found no documented confirmation from a second location; its worker nodes share the load. If you want a second self-hosted option, it is the one to look at; these facts come from its repository.

How to try an alternative without a gap

  • Keep Better Stack running. Nothing here requires cancelling first. Monitor the same sites from both for two weeks and compare the alerts you got.
  • Keep the on-call layer if you use it. Better Stack accepts incoming webhooks; a monitor that posts confirmed outages to it keeps your rota and escalation unchanged while the checks move.
  • Count sites × checks, not plans. A 5-minute monitor is 8,640 checks a month, a 1-minute one 43,200. That number, times your site count, is what a pay-per-use service bills and what a bundle plan rounds up.
  • Import instead of retyping. Better Stack has an API; PingWise’s switch page imports from an exported list or a file with a preview of what will and won’t come over, and from a hosting panel directly.

Better Stack alternatives: common questions

What is the cheapest Better Stack alternative for 100 or more sites?

At 5-minute checks, PingWise (€3.21 a month for 100 sites, €15.83 for 500) and updown.io (pay-per-use, €43.20 for 500) are the cheapest hosted options, and Uptime Kuma is free on your own server. At 1-minute checks StatusCake’s €16.66 plan covers up to 100 monitors, and PingWise is €15.83 for 100 and €46.93 for 500. Better Stack is $42 and $210 at either interval.

Is Better Uptime the same as Better Stack?

Yes. Better Uptime is now the Uptime product of Better Stack, alongside Logs (formerly Logtail). The bundles and on-call seats on this page are the current Better Stack pricing.

Which alternative has the fewest false alerts?

Judge by the documented confirmation rule. Better Stack needs at least 3 of 4 or more locations; HetrixTools more than half of the selected locations; updown.io three failures with one from another location; UptimeRobot and StatusCake re-check in the same region; PingWise needs 10 of 15 probes on 3 continents and 3 providers, twice. HetrixTools and PingWise document that every scheduled check runs from several locations, not only the confirmation.

Which alternatives have on-call, SMS or phone alerts?

None of the six has an on-call rota like Better Stack’s. UptimeRobot, StatusCake and HetrixTools document SMS and phone calls; updown.io documents SMS. PingWise alerts by email, Telegram, Slack, Teams, Discord, Google Chat, PagerDuty, ntfy, Pushover and webhook, and no SMS yet; PagerDuty provides the rota.

Can I give each of my customers their own monitoring?

PingWise does this: a hosting provider or agency can create an account per customer under the provider’s own brand, with the customer’s checks paid from one pool of credits and a monthly cap per customer, and alerts and status pages in the provider’s name. We did not find a per-customer account model documented by the other five; Better Stack and StatusCake have team and sub-account features aimed at one organisation.
